For decades, I only slept a few hours a night as I prioritized my work over sleep.
Eventually, I wanted to change this situation.
I tried a lot of things and improved my sleep in very small steps.

One step was the Eight Sleep Pod. Here’s a little insight into my journey to better sleep with the help of the Eight Sleep Pod.

A dark gray, rectangular smart speaker with the number 8 on the front stands on a wooden surface. The device has a fabric cover and is connected to a socket visible in the background. A dim light can be seen on the underside of the speaker, which is ideal for a good night's sleep.

The Eight Sleep Pod is a smart mattress cover that uses integrated technology to automatically adjust the temperature to improve sleep comfort and quality.
It also offers sleep monitoring and control functions via a mobile app.

Initially, I had the problem that the sizes of the Eight Sleep Pod topper do not fit all mattresses.
My mattress was 2 meters wide.
Admittedly, the width is more than sufficient.
As my mattress was already 12 years old, I seized the moment and bought a new – slightly smaller – sleeping mattress.

A bedroom with a large bed with a white comforter, two bedside tables with lamps, wooden floor, exposed ceiling beams, a clothes rack and a metal shelf. The room is designed for a good night's sleep with its peaceful atmosphere and the natural light that streams in through the large window on the left.

The journey began on November 21, 2023.
That night I slept for 6 hours and 27 minutes.
However, I had an extra-relaxed day and had taken several milligrams of melatonin.
The real test was whether this improvement would last.
When I monitored my sleep over the following weeks, I found that both the quantity and quality of my rest had indeed improved minimally.
The new year brought further success.
On February 12, 2024, I slept for 7 hours and 46 minutes.
Overall, however, the results were not consistent, i.e. there were also significantly lower sleep times depending on external and internal stress factors.
Nevertheless, the Eight Sleep Pod has remained a piece of the puzzle for better sleep for me.

Another important aspect for me is that my wife likes it warmer when she sleeps and I prefer it colder. With the cooling and heating functions of the Eight Sleep Pod, we can regulate our sleeping sides independently of each other.
That is very helpful.

The limitations of the Eight Sleep Pod for me are the noise it makes during the night.
The
The central unit, the so-called hub or the heat and circulation pump it contains, makes noises.
This disturbs me a little, as I was used to sleeping in absolute silence until now.
I cover a small light at the bottom of the unit so that I can sleep in complete darkness at night.

The Eight Sleep Pod measures sleep values using various sensors contained in the mattress cover. The CPU unit processes and analyzes the sleep data.
However, this data differs significantly from other sleep trackers.
In my opinion, the measurement results of all sleep trackers available for the average consumer are relatively inaccurate.

Sleep tracking data is displayed on the screen of a smartphone, showing a sleep score of 84 (Good). Sleep factors include total sleep time, efficiency, restfulness, sound sleep, REM sleep, deep sleep, latency and timing. Different metrics show different time periods and percentages. A sleep report for Friday, June 21, 2024 is displayed on a smartphone screen. The report includes a graph of sleep stages showing different waking stages, REM sleep, light sleep and deep sleep. Health metrics are also displayed: Heart rate of 61 beats per minute, HRV at 77 ms and a respiratory rate of 16.5/min - important indicators of healthy sleep.

However, I find other sleep meter measurements a bit more accurate compared to Eight Sleep and no longer use the Eight Sleep Pod data as bio-feedback for myself.
For example, on 21.6.
I had a sleep score of 84% with Oura, which is rated as good, but only a deep sleep of 30 minutes and divided into a short phase shortly before 2 am and a longer deep sleep phase shortly before 6 am.
In contrast, the Eight Sleep measurement gave me a sleep score of 100% and a deep sleep duration of 1.11 hours, which should have taken place between 11 pm and 1 am.
Such differences are constant.

So if you have a few thousand euros to spare – it costs from 2400 euros upwards – I can recommend giving the Eight Sleep a try.
