Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) helps with generalised anxiety disorders

A study from Toronto, Canada investigated the effectiveness of osteopathic manipulative treatments (OMT) in patients with moderate to severe anxiety disorders.
The results show a significant reduction in the anxiety disorder as well as a
increased tolerance of uncertain situations after just five sessions,
which were carried out over a period of eight to nine weeks.

MethodsThis open, non-randomised black-box study took place at a tertiary care institution.
Mental Health Services Clinic in Toronto, Canada. Adult outpatient participants aged 18 to 65 years with a primary diagnosis of moderate-severe GAD (HAM-A score of ≥20) with or without comorbidities were enrolled in the study between June 2014 and January 2015.
Patients who qualified for and completed the study received 5 individually tailored OMT sessions over a period of 8 to 9 weeks. A diagnostic psychiatric assessment (Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview version 6,0,0) was conducted to confirm diagnoses, along with clinician-monitored and self-reported measures of anxiety, including the Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA), the Beck Anxiety Inventory, and the Intolerance to Uncertainty Scale.

ResultsSignificant reductions in total HAM-A scores after OMT were observed (P<.0001). Significant reductions in Intolerance for Uncertainty Scale total scores were also observed (P<.0001). Beck Anxiety Inventory scores were not significantly altered with OMT. Response (defined as 50%ige reduction in symptoms) and remission (defined as HAM-A score of ≤7) were noted at rates of 62% and 26.9%, respectively.

Biological effects following Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment

In a groundbreaking review, Dal Farra et al. (2024) systematically map the biological effects of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) across various body systems, with a particular focus on neurophysiological and musculoskeletal changes. The study, which followed rigorous scoping review guidelines and included 146 studies, underscores the growing interest in OMT research over the past two decades. While the findings suggest that OMT has significant therapeutic potential, particularly in neurophysiological and musculoskeletal health, the review also highlights the need for more standardized research to confirm these effects and their clinical relevance. Explore the detailed insights and future research directions outlined in this comprehensive review.
